Efficacy of biologics for the treatment of periodontal infrabony defects: An American Academy of Periodontology best evidence systematic review and network meta-analysis

Lorenzo Tavelli, Chia-Yu (Jennifer) Chen, Shayan Barootchi, David M. Kim

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0120

A large variety of biomaterials, biologics and membranes have been utilized in the past 40 years for the regenerative treatment of periodontal infrabony defects. Biologic agents have progressively gained popularity among clinicians and are routinely used for periodontal regeneration.

Efficacy of biologics for alveolar ridge preservation/reconstruction and implant site development: An American Academy of Periodontology best evidence systematic review

Fernando Suárez-López del Amo, Alberto Monje

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0069

The use of biologics may be indicated for alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) and reconstruction (ARR), and implant site development (ISD). The present systematic review aimed to analyze the effect of autologous blood-derived products (ABPs), enamel matrix derivative (EMD), recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB), and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2), on the outcomes of ARP/ARR and ISD therapy (i.e., alveolar ridge augmentation [ARA] and maxillary sinus floor augmentation [MSFA]).

Prevalence of periodontal disease in young Moroccans: A national survey

Jamila Kissa, Bouchra El Houari, Khadija Amine, Sihame Chemlali, Nadia Khlil, Salwa Mikou, Amina Gharibi, Imane El Ouadnassi, Chouaib Rifki, Jasim M. Albandar

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0103

There are few large surveys of periodontal disease in young age cohorts, and national surveys in Africa do not exist. This study assessed the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease in a national survey of adolescents and young adults in Morocco.

Comparative evaluation of 1% melatonin gel in the treatment of intrabony defect: A randomized controlled clinical trial

Noopur P. Gonde, Surekha R. Rathod, Abhay P. Kolte

doi : 10.1002/JPER.21-0515

The present study aims to evaluate and compare the efficacy of locally delivered 1% melatonin gel as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) in treatment of intrabony defect in Stage III periodontitis, clinically, and radiographically using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Poor oral health status and adverse COVID-19 outcomes: A preliminary study in hospitalized patients

Camila Alves Costa, Ana Carolina Serafim Vilela, Suzane Aparecida Oliveira, Tiago Dias Gomes, Alex Alves Costa Andrade, Cláudio Rodrigues Leles, Nádia Lago Costa

doi : 10.1002/JPER.21-0624

Most of the common risk factors for severe outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are correlated with poor oral health, tooth loss, and periodontitis. This has pointed to a possible relationship between oral and systemic health in COVID-19 patients. Hence, this study aimed to assess the dental and periodontal status of hospitalized COVID-19 patients and their associations with the incidence of adverse COVID-19 outcomes.

Circulating small extracellular vesicles from patients with periodontitis contribute to development of insulin resistance

Fei Wang, Linlin Peng, Fan Gu, Pei Huang, Bo Cheng, Gang Chen, Liuyan Meng, Zhuan Bian

doi : 10.1002/JPER.22-0035

Epidemiological studies have identified the role of periodontitis in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, but the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. It is well-known that small extracellular vesicles are lipid bilayer vesicles derived from cells with a diameter around 30 to 200 nm. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether periodontitis induced or exacerbated insulin resistance via circulating small extracellular vesicles.

Raman microspectroscopy/micro-optical coherence tomography approach for chairside diagnosis of periodontal diseases: A pilot study

Arjun Saggu, Gopi Maguluri, John Grimble, Jesung Park, Hatice Hasturk, Nicusor Iftimia, Corneliu Sima

doi : 10.1002/JPER.21-0710

Our objective was to develop and test a combined Raman microspectroscopy (RMS) and micro-optical coherence tomography (μOCT) approach for chairside quantification of gingival collagen, DNA, epithelium, and connective tissue. We hypothesized that a high-resolution RMS/μOCT can characterize healthy and inflamed periodontal tissues for diagnosis and disease activity monitoring.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor regulates specific innate immune sensor responses in gingival epithelial cells

Nutthapong Kantrong, Ana M. Chang, Shatha Bamashmous, Adeline M. Hajjar, Richard J. Bucala, Richard P. Darveau

doi : 10.1002/JPER.21-0598

The gingival epithelium protects periodontal tissues and the alveolar bone by maintaining a steady state of regulated inflammatory surveillance, also known as healthy homeostasis. Accordingly, the repertoire of receptors present within the gingival epithelium showcases its ability to recognize microbial colonization and contribute to bacterial sensing.

Construction of an end-to-end regression neural network for the determination of a quantitative index sagittal root inclination

Yixiong Lin, Mengru Shi, Dawei Xiang, Peisheng Zeng, Zhuohong Gong, Haiwen Liu, Quan Liu, Zhuofan Chen, Juan Xia, Zetao Chen

doi : 10.1002/JPER.21-0492

Immediate implant placement in the esthetic area requires comprehensive assessments with nearly 30 quantitative indexes. Most artificial intelligence (AI)-driven measurements of quantitative indexes depend on segmentation or landmark detection, which require extra labeling of images and contain possible intraclass errors.
