Volume 104(21) pgs. 1859-1959,e92-e92 November 2, 2022

Patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) often report chronic back pain; however, there is inadequate research on psychological factors associated with pain in this patient population. Pain catastrophizing, a psychological factor that describes a pattern of negative thoughts and feelings about pain, has been associated with poorer responses to medical treatment for pain.

Genome-Wide Association Study of Adhesive Capsulitis Suggests Significant Genetic Risk Factors.

Kulm, Scott PhD 1; Langhans, Mark T. MD, PhD 2,*; Shen, Tony S. MD 2; Kolin, David A. BS 1; Elemento, Olivier PhD 1; Rodeo, Scott A. MD 2

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.21.01407

pg. 1869-1876

Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder involves loss of passive range of motion with associated pain and can develop spontaneously, with no obvious injury or inciting event. The pathomechanism of this disorder remains to be elucidated, but known risk factors for adhesive capsulitis include diabetes, female sex, and thyroid dysfunction. Additionally, transcriptional profiling and pedigree analyses have suggested a role for genetics.

Outcomes of Intramedullary Nailing and External Fixation of Open Tibial Fractures: Three to Five-Year Follow-up of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

Cortez, Abigail MD 1,2,a; Urva, Mayur BS 2; Haonga, Billy MD 3; Donnelley, Claire A. MD 2; von Kaeppler, Ericka P. MD, PhD 2; Roberts, Heather J. MD 2; Shearer, David W. MD, MPH 2; Morshed, Saam MD, PhD, MPH 2,4

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.22.00016

pg. 1877-1885

While surgeons in low and middle-income countries have increasing experience with intramedullary nailing (IMN), external fixation (EF) continues to be commonly used for the management of open tibial fractures. We examined outcomes with extended follow-up of the participants enrolled in a clinical trial comparing these treatments.

SS-31 as a Mitochondrial Protectant in the Treatment of Tendinopathy: Evaluation in a Murine Supraspinatus Tendinopathy Model.

Zhang, Xueying MD, PhD 1,2; Bowen, Edward BA 2; Zhang, Meng PhD 2; Szeto, Hazel H. MD, PhD 3; Deng, Xiang-Hua MD 2; Rodeo, Scott A. MD 2,a

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.21.01449

pg. 1886-1894

Prior studies have demonstrated mitochondrial dysfunction in tendinopathy. The objective of this investigation was to explore the potential of SS-31 (elamipretide), a mitochondrial protectant, to improve mitochondrial function and promote tendon healing in a murine supraspinatus tendinopathy model.

Inflammatory Response in Robotic-Arm-Assisted Versus Conventional Jig-Based TKA and the Correlation with Early Functional Outcomes: Results of a Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

Fontalis, Andreas MD, MSc, MRCS 1,2,a; Kayani, Babar BSc, MBBS, MRCS, PhD 1; Asokan, Ajay MBBS, BSc, MRCS 1; Haddad, Isabella Catrina 1; Tahmassebi, Jenni BSc, MCSP 1; Konan, Sujith MBBS, MD, MRCS, FRCS 1,2; Oussedik, Sam BSc, MBBS, MRCS, FRCS 1; Haddad, Fares S. BSc, MD, MCh, FRCS, FFSEM 1,2

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.22.00167

pg. 1905-1914

Although the exact etiology of patient dissatisfaction in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is unclear, the inflammatory response precipitated by surgery may be implicated. Robotic TKA has been shown to result in reduced bone and soft-tissue trauma.

Sleep Disturbances and Disorders in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis and Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Bartosiak, Kimberly MD 1; Schwabe, Maria MD, MPHS 1; Lucey, Brendan MD, MSCI, FAASM 1; Lawrie, Charles MD, MSc 2; Barrack, Robert MD 1,a

doi : 10.2106/JBJS.21.01448

pg. 1946-1955

AB There is increasing evidence that patient-reported outcomes following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are associated with psychosocial factors and pain catastrophizing. Sleep disturbance, pain, and mental health have a complex interaction, which, if unrecognized, can be associated with impaired patient-reported outcomes and dissatisfaction following TKA.
