Isaac S. Gomes-Filho,Pedro N. P. Santos,Simone S. Cruz,Ana C. M. G. Figueiredo,Soraya C. Trindade,Ana M. Ladeia,Eneida M. M. Cerqueira,Johelle S. Passos-Soares,Julita M. F. Coelho,Alexandre M. Hintz,Maurício L. Barreto,Ricardo G. Fischer,Peter M. Loomer,Frank A. Scannapieco

doi : 10.1002/JPER.21-0004

Volume 92, Issue 11 p. 1509-1521

Periodontitis and the Triglyceride/High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio have both been associated with cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. Additionally, the ratio is a possible substitute for predicting insulin resistance. This study investigated the association between periodontitis, its severity levels (exposures), and the TG/HDL-C ratio (outcome).

Casey D. Wright,Brenda Heaton,Daniel W. McNeil

doi : 10.1002/JPER.20-0066

Volume 92, Issue 11 p. 1554-1563

Self-report measures of periodontal disease have utility for screening, but have not capitalized on a latent variable approach based on psychometric theory to validate such measures. This study aimed to develop a psychometrically valid self-report measure of periodontal disease using latent variable factor analysis and other evidence-based psychometric analyses.

Efficacy of inorganic bovine bone combined with leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin or collagen membranes for treating unfavorable periodontal infrabony defects: Randomized non-inferiority trial

Imena Rexhepi,Michele Paolantonio,Luigi Romano,Matteo Serroni,Pasquale Santamaria,Lorenzo Secondi,Giulia Paolantonio,Bruna Sinjari,Paolo De Ninis,Beatrice Femminella

doi : 10.1002/JPER.20-0305

Volume 92, Issue 11 p. 1576-1587

Growing evidence shows the efficacy of platelet concentrates in periodontal therapy. This study aimed to demonstrate that an inorganic bovine bone graft (IBB) in combination with a leukocyte and platelet rich fibrin (L-PRF) is non-inferior to a combination with a collagen membrane (CM) when managing unfavorable infrabony defects (IBDs).

Efficacy of an Er:YAG laser in the decontamination of dental implant surfaces: An in vitro study

Hani S. AlMoharib,Bjorn Steffensen,Driss Zoukhri,Matthew Finkelman,Robert Gyurko

doi : 10.1002/JPER.20-0765

Volume 92, Issue 11 p. 1613-1621

Emergence of peri-implant diseases led to the development of various methods for implant surface decontamination. This study was designed to compare the efficacy of biofilm removal from implant-like titanium surfaces by an erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser, titanium brush, and carbon fiber curet.

Recombinant thrombomodulin lectin-like domain attenuates Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide-induced osteoclastogenesis and periodontal bone resorption

Lan-Yun Chang,Chao-Han Lai,Cheng-Hsiang Kuo,Bi-Ing Chang,Hua-Lin Wu,Tsung-Lin Cheng

doi : 10.1002/JPER.20-0732

Volume 92, Issue 11 p. 1622-1634

Evidence demonstrates that the thrombomodulin (TM) lectin domain (TMD1) exerts anti-inflammatory functions. Lipopolysaccharides derived from Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg-LPS) are considered a major pathogenic factor for chronic periodontitis, promoting inflammation, osteoclastogenesis and alveolar bone resorption. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the potential therapeutic effect of recombinant TMD1 (rTMD1) in suppression of Pg-LPS-induced osteoclastogenesis and periodontal bone loss.

Hypoxia stimulates collagen hydroxylation in gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells

Chiaki Morimoto,Masahide Takedachi,Kohsuke Kawasaki,Junpei Shimomura,Mari Murata,Asae Hirai,Kazuma Kawakami,Keigo Sawada,Tomoaki Iwayama,Shinya Murakami

doi : 10.1002/JPER.20-0670

Volume 92, Issue 11 p. 1635-1645

Cellular responses to hypoxia regulate various biological events, including angiogenesis and extracellular matrix metabolism. Collagen is a major component of the extracellular matrix in periodontal tissues and its coordinated production is essential for tissue homeostasis. In this study, we investigated the effects of hypoxia on collagen production in human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) and human periodontal ligament cells (HPDLs).

Compressive force regulates cementoblast migration via downregulation of autophagy

Yuhui Yang,Yiping Huang,Hao Liu,Yunfei Zheng,Lingfei Jia,Weiran Li

doi : 10.1002/JPER.20-0806

Volume 92, Issue 11 p. e128-e138

Migration of cementoblasts to resorption lacunae is the foundation for repairing root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement. Previous studies reported that autophagy was activated by compression in periodontal ligament cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the migration of cementoblasts and determine whether autophagy is involved in the regulation of cementoblast migration under compressive force.
