Cutaneous and Allergic reactions due to COVID-19 vaccinations: A review

Selami Aykut Temiz MD,Ayman Abdelmaksoud MSc,Uwe Wollina MD,Omer Kutlu MD,Recep Dursun MD,Anant Patil MD,Torello Lotti MD,Mohamad Goldust MD,Michelangelo Vestita MD

doi : 10.1111/jocd.14613

Volume 21, Issue 1 p. 4-12

The pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had an unprecedented impact on the overall health and the global economy. Vaccination is currently the most dependable strategy to end the pandemic, despite the slower-than-hoped-for rollout, particularly for low-to-middle-income countries, and the uncertain duration of protection afforded by vaccination. The spike protein of the virus (immunodominant antigen of the virus) is the main target of the approved and candidate SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. This protein binds to the ACE2 receptor of the host cell, initiating the entry of the virus into the cell and the chain of subsequent events ending to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. The safety profile of these vaccines needs is closely assessed.

Trends in cosmetic consumer preferences during COVID-19 pandemic: Comparing 2021 to 2020

Jordan V. Wang MD, MBE, MBA,Girish S. Munavalli MD, MHS,Christopher B. Zachary MBBS, FRCP,Roy G. Geronemus MD

doi : 10.1111/jocd.14615

Volume 21, Issue 1 p. 48-50

This commentary evaluates trends in the factors influencing consumer decision-making for cosmetic dermatologic procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. This is a follow-up national survey to one that was published 1 year ago. This study compares the data from Summer 2020 to early Summer 2021, which presents a stark contrast. Our results demonstrate that consumers are now more interested in cosmetic dermatologic procedures compared to 1 year prior. Additionally, they still value the overall safety of the clinic, so physicians should ensure that certain safety measures remain in place despite any decreasing rates of COVID-19 positivity. Our survey sheds more light on current consumer perspectives, which may in turn help physicians adjust their practices to meet current demand. It is important for physicians to be knowledgeable regarding the patterns of consumer decision-making in order to deliver appropriate patient education and provide proper patient outreach during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Effects of macrophage regulation on fat grafting survival: Improvement, mechanisms, and potential application—A review

Autologous fat grafting has become a popular tool in plastic surgery to solve soft tissue defects and achieve skin rejuvenation, but the volume loss after transplantation remains a disturbing problem. In recent years, some new strategies have improved the outcome to some extent, but the fat graft retention is still far from ideal, so there remains a wide development prospect in this field. Macrophages are closely related to the local microenvironment and tissue regeneration, and their role in fat grafting has been increasingly highlighted.

Considerations on zero-degree cellulite

Doris Hexsel MD,Indira Valente Bezerra MD,Gabriela Mosena MD,Camile Hexsel MD

doi : 10.1111/jocd.14598

Volume 21, Issue 1 p. 134-136

Cellulite affects almost all women, and it is characterized by surface relief alterations, mainly located on the thighs and buttocks, and other areas. Whereas depressed lesions occur due to the presence of thick subcutaneous fibrous septa that pull the skin surface down, raised areas result from the projection of underlying fat to the skin surface. We support that the absence of cellulite can be defined as the ideal balance between the mechanical forces that act between the subcutaneous structures, such as fat and fibrous septa and muscles, and the overlying skin.

Perioral volumization using a temperature controlled fractionated radiofrequency device

Julie Boisen MD,Suzanne Alkul MD,Cedar H. Malone MD,Gilly Munavalli MD, MHS

doi : 10.1111/jocd.14083

Volume 21, Issue 1 p. 237-241

Cosmetic rejuvenation of the perioral area can be challenging due to a mix of skin laxity and volumetric loss. Current techniques including fillers, neurotoxins, and non-ablative and ablative resurfacing have several drawbacks and can create a stiff, box-shaped, unnatural appearance. Aside from filler, these techniques do not address deeper volume deficiency. Temperature controlled fractionated radiofrequency (FRF) provides consistent formation of new collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. This has been reported to provide long-lasting results for the treatment of skin laxity and volume loss of the face and neck with a single treatment, but it has not been previously reported for perioral rejuvenation.

Safeguarding the integrity of the donor site during the initial suspension phase of an interpolation flap is difficult. There are a variety of approaches and no consensus on post-operative management of the donor site or pedicle following the creation of the flap. The use of xenografts at the donor site of postauricular interpolation flaps simplifies post-operative wound care and prevents infection, desiccation of tissue, reduces pain, and assists with hemostasis.
