Sources of heparin to be avoided in individuals with HIT

Sources of heparin to be avoided in individuals with HIT
Heparin is present in the following products, which should be avoided in individuals with HIT
Unfractionated heparin (intravenous or subcutaneous)
Low molecular weight heparins*
Heparin flushes (eg, in arterial lines or heparin locks)
Heparin-bonded catheters
Heparin-containing medications such as some PCCs
Some hematopoietic stem cell products (eg, apheresis-derived peripheral blood stem cells)
Some total parenteral nutrition (TPN) products
Refer to UpToDate for additional details. Certain patients with a remote history of HIT and negative HIT antibody testing may receive a brief exposure to heparin during cardiopulmonary bypass.
HIT: heparin-induced thrombocytopenia; PCCs: prothrombin complex concentrates.
* Low molecular weight heparins include dalteparin, enoxaparin, nadroparin, and tinzaparin.
